Equilibrium

Would you be willing to fight for your right to feel? Is it that important to you? Even if the eradication of feeling would bring about peace? These are the questions that the movie Equilibrium brings up.
My disclaimer is that this is an action movie and can be quite violent. The message is great though. Christian Bale is John Preston, a cleric whose sole purpose is to seek out people who are not taking their emotion suppressing drug and are considered as renegades against the government. The intentions of the government began as quite the admirable ideal...get rid of emotion and there will be no war. This obviously does not go over very well with the whole population who enjoy being able to do things like love, cry and appreciate fine art and music. The plan starts to go sour when Preston misses a dose of his drug and begins to feel.
I won't give away the ending but the idea is that emotion and passion cannot be suppressed. People have the need to be able to express themselves. In my opinion the modern drug is simply fear of failure or rejection. We are not likely to share our thoughts or show our talents when we think that we will be put down for it. We should never allow other to stop us from being who we can be. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Other films that explore a similar premise are 'A Clock Work Orange' and 'THX 1138'. Also you have the book 'The Giver'.

gotta respect the originality of Equilibrium's gun-fu... plus there's some admirable underlying meaning to the whole thing
