This morning I was able to finally watch the movie "Bridge to Terabithia". I remember loving this book as a child and reading it several times. I could not, however, remember the plot or why I had loved it so much. Very quickly I was reminded.
Jess, the main character, is a boy that is picked on at school despite his talents of being a fast runner and an amazing artist. You can tell that the only time he can be himself is when he is drawing and creating new things in his notebook. A new girl shows up at school on the first day of a new school year. Leslie happens to be faster than even Jess and the child of two writers. She has an amazing imagination. Over time they become friends and decide that they need to create a world just for themselves on the land across a creek. They become the king and queen of Terabithia as Leslie teaches Jess that he needs to keep his mind wide open. The things they create with their imaginations are fantastic.
I won't give away the ending because I could not remember it and it was quite poignant. Everyone should watch this and remember what it was like to be a kid where your mind is a slate and anything can be created. Our mind is our own and no one can mess with what we dream. They use the phrase "Nothing Crushes Us" to signify that they are the rulers of their world and nothing can squash their desires.
