It seems that during the summer my heart always become more patriotic. I begin to think more of those who came before and died for something that I firmly believe in. I love the United States of America. We may have our problems....but I believe based on many personal experiences that we have the greatest nation on earth.
For those of you who don't know about flag day, check out the short article on Wikipedia. Make sure that you all put up a flag today and show your patriotism.
To go along with Flag Day I watched the Alamo. For those who did not know, I was born in Texas and lived there for almost 12 years. The Alamo was my favorite subject of Texas history. For specific information on the battle of the Alamo, again visit Wikipedia. The movie is pretty good, though it does leave out quite a few of the details. The Alamo was the place of a very decisive battle for Texan independence between Texans and the army of General Santa Anna. Those who have seen the movie or know the history might know that my favorite player in this history is Colonel William Barrett Travis. While all of the men at the Alamo were slaughtered, this battle helped to cripple Santa Anna's army and allow General Sam Houston (yes, that's where the city got it's name) to defeat the Mexicans and capture and execute Santa Anna.
The reason why this history is so amazing and profound to me is that the men at the Alamo were not professional soldiers, but were fighting for something that they believed in. They desired the freedom of Texas and their families. There was even a group of Mexicans who had dubbed themselves Tejanos who fought with the Texans for their own right to be free from tyranny.
Everyone knows about Texas Pride. This is one of the reasons why. They had to fight to gain their freedom. In my mind this is the kind of pride that should permeate American culture. We had to fight for what we have. Let's not forget our ancestors who gave us our freedom.

I had my flag out today Travis.
The 2004 Alamo was an okay movie.
Sam Huston had been a school teacher in Maryville Tennessee (my final mission area) before his time in Texas. The old school house he taught at has been restored and is open to tourists. In addition to being the President of Texas, he is also the only man in American history to have been the Governor of two states, Tennessee and Texas.
